China and Malaysia agreed to extend the mutual visa-free entry system for their citizens, according to a joint statement released on Thursday. The announcement came as Chinese Premier Li Chang’s three-day visit to Malaysia was completed in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur (pictured).
Chinese authorities had already announced in May that they would extend their visa waiver policy for Malaysian citizens until Dec. 31, 2025. Malaysia will extend its visa-free entry system for Chinese citizens until the end of 2026, according to a statement on Thursday.
The announcement said the two sides are “very interested in continuing consultations and discussions on mutual visa waivers to facilitate entry for nationals of Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China.”

Malaysian passport holders will be exempt from a Chinese visa if they stay in the country for more than 15 days for “business, tourism, family visits and transit purposes.”
In late May, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said China was set to extend visa-free travel for Malaysian tourists from 15 days to 30 days. He said a fulfillment contract would be signed “at a later date.”
Malaysia’s casino sector is on the mend with the return of foreign tourists. Genting Malaysia, which monopolizes casinos in Malaysia at Resorts World Genting, reported first-quarter net profit of just under $36.7 million (W7.8 million).
Revenue in the three months to March 31 was slightly above $2.76 billion, with Resorts World Genting accounting for $1.75 billion of the group’s overall leisure and lodging sales.
Genting Malaysia also operates casinos in the United States, the Bahamas, the United Kingdom, and Egypt through related companies.
The casino company’s management said earlier this month that an increase in tourists travelling to Malaysia from Singapore, Indonesia, China and India helped boost Resorts World Genting’s first-quarter sales.
