Heroes rally past Eagles, Ryu Hyun-jin for 5th straight win

Kim Hye-seong of the Kiwoom Heroes, left, celebrates after hitting an RBI single against the Hanwha Eagles during the clubs' Korea Baseball Organization regular-season game at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, April 5. Yonhap

Riding one explosive inning, the Kiwoom Heroes defeated the Hanwha Eagles 11-7 on Friday for their fifth straight win in the young Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season. The Heroes, who enjoyed their first sellout of the season with 16,000 fans on hand, also deserved a bonus style point for knocking out former major league All-Star Ryu Hyun-jin early. The Heroes turned a 4-0 deficit into a 10-4 lead with some ruthless hitting in the fifth inning, when they roughed up Ryu for eight hits, including seven in a row. Ryu got charged with a career-worst nine earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, falling to 0-2 after three starts in his first season back in the KBO following 11 years in Major League Baseball (MLB). Ryu’s ERA ballooned from 3.72 to 8.36.Ryu’s search for his first KBO win since September 2012 will continue next week. The Eagles led 1-0 after a one-out double by No. 9 hitter Lee Jin-young in the third. With Ryu in cruise control, the Eagles put up a three-spot in the top fourth.Backup shortstop Lee Do-yun cashed in a run with a double to right field, after entering the game in the bottom third when starting shortstop Ha Ju-suk complained of left hamstring tightness. Lee hit a fly to shallow right field, and right fielder Lee Hyung-jong let the ball skip past him, allowing Roh Si-hwan to score easily from third.

The Eagles then had two straight sacrifice flies from Lee Jae-won and Choi In-ho to open up a 4-0 lead. That seemed to be plenty of run support for Ryu, who held the Heroes to a single through four innings. But then disaster struck for the left-hander in the fifth. Seemingly in the blink of an eye, the Eagles scored seven runs on eight hits against Ryu, who got the hook after the Heroes took a 7-4 lead. The Eagles then tacked on three more runs with new pitcher Kim Seo-hyeon on the mound to build a 10-4 lead. All told, the Heroes sent 16 batters to the plate to score 10 times on nine hits, a walk and an error in the fifth inning. The Eagles made things interesting in the top of the seventh. They scored three runs to cut the deficit to 10-7. Then with two outs, they had the bases loaded for pinch hitter Kim Tae-yean, but lefty reliever Kim Jae-woong got him whiffing on a 1-2 fastball to end that threat. The next Heroes pitcher, Ju Seung-woo, struck out the side in the top eighth, and the Heroes got an insurance run in the bottom half of that inning courtesy of Kim Hye-seong’s single.Moon Sung-hyun followed Ju by striking out two batters in a clean ninth inning. There was a sizable Eagles contingent at the dome, but they went home disappointed as the Eagles dropped two of their past three games. The Heroes have now scored at least 10 runs in two consecutive games, a feat that no other club has achieved this season.Leadoff man Lee Ju-hyoung went 3-for-5 for the Heroes, and he has 10 hits in his first 13 at-bats of this season.Eight Kiwoom hitters recorded at least an 메이저 RBI
