Despite the unprecedented 30-day shutdown of Nevada casinos and growing concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak, World Series poker officials are still preparing to “trade in confusion” at the Rio All-Sweet Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on May 26, when the 2020 event is set to begin.
WSOP Vice President Seth Fallonski told Casino City on Sunday evening, “I’ve been taking it day by day, and at this point, it’s an hour by hour,” adding, “We still have more than two months left, so we plan to operate as scheduled for now.”
That said, Fallonski and his fellow WSOP decision makers are not well aware of the reality of the situation. All live events at the WSOP circuit have been canceled until the end of April. They know that poker players around the world are trying to decide whether to trek to Las Vegas or even play live to participate in the most prestigious competition of the year. They are aware of the public outcry coming from some corners (Deadspin posted an article on Mar. 12 titled, “World Poker Series is a Petri dish for disease. Why on earth hasn’t it been canceled yet?” They take these concerns very seriously. 안전놀이터
“Poker is not the point right now in a grand plan,” Fallonski said. “We want social distancing. We want everyone to be safe and healthy and not worry about the Poker World Series.
“We will do the right thing. We will follow the guidelines of medical professionals and make decisions when the time is right. But for now, we remain optimistic. It would be nice if we could host it. It would be sad if we couldn’t do it. But life will go either way.”
Of course, the WSOP schedule includes more than 80 events scheduled to run through July 15, so you don’t have to cancel everything all at once. At least that’s exactly what WSOP poker player and avid player Ron McIcheran is thinking. McIcheran told Casino City that he has suggested to WSOP officials that they can cancel it on a weekly to weekly basis or two-week basis if needed.
“They have that flexibility,” McEarn said. “It’s better to have an abbreviated World Series than nothing at all.”
McIcheran also thinks WSOP is doing something prudent right now by preparing every system to “go.”
