Son Heung-min’s near-one-man show against Newcastle United earned him a spot on the Team of the Week for the round’s best performances.
The BBC unveiled its Team of the Week on Monday (Nov. 11), recognizing the 11 best performers from the 16th round of the English Premier League (EPL). Four players from Bournemouth’s 3-0 win over Manchester United were named to the team, which is based on the 3-4-3 formation.
Including Son Heung-min. On Nov. 11, Son recorded a goal and two assists in Tottenham’s 4-1 win over Newcastle in the Round of 16 of the 2023-2024 EPL at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Son Heung-min, who started as a flanker rather than a frontline player, assisted Destiny Udogi’s first goal in the 26th minute. He drove down the flank and sent in a quick cross that Udogi calmly finished. In the 38th minute, another sharp cross led to another goal for Hichalisson. It was a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to Son Heung-min, the ‘Captain’.
There was more to come. In the 40th minute of the second half, with the score 3-0, Heung-min drew a foul on goalkeeper Martin Dubravka as he rushed into the opponent’s penalty box, earning a penalty kick, which he calmly converted to seal the deal. With his 10th goal of the season, Son became the seventh player in EPL history to score double-digit goals in eight consecutive seasons.
“Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier, who has been in impressive form this season, was brought down by Son Heung-min and eventually substituted,” according to the BBC, which acknowledged that Son rattled the Newcastle flank with his threatening moves.
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) and Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth) joined Son up front, while Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Lewis Cook (Bournemouth), and James McAteer (Sheffield United) rounded out the midfield. The back four is made up of Kierkegaard-Milosi (Bournemouth), Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham) and Kemarcos Senesi (Bournemouth), while Liverpool’s goalkeeper is Alisson.
