Peppermill Hotels-Casino plans to announce a $230 million expansion this week, including a new hotel, convention space and a larger gambling center, the newspaper reported on Sunday.
“We are excited to hold a press conference Thursday to announce the $230 million expansion,” Peppermill spokesperson Kim Stoll told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “At that time, all the facts and artist offerings will be announced.”
The southern Reno casino has sent invitations to news conferences to several city officials and community leaders, who confirmed they received them on Friday.

In 1999, pepper mill officials announced plans to spend $230 million to add 632 room hotels, expand casinos and retail stores, create new parking lots, and add convention spaces.
These components, as well as hotel and parking expansion, are possible through permits taken out with the city at the time.
That year, the hotel casino spent $65 million renovating and expanding a number of facilities, including using the space of the closed Century Theater.
“The qualifications they received at the time are still valid,” Zadra said, “and that’s more than what we typically see in expansion. That’s a pretty big deal.”
Las Vegas-based Station Casino Inc. has announced plans for two Southern Reno Hotel casinos. An expert said the expansion of pepper mill could be a smart move to prevent competition.
“Peppermill could be an attempt to jump in here and proactively block the station’s interest in the market,” said Bill Edington, director of the Gambling and Commercial Gaming Laboratory at the University of Reno Nevada.
The region is showing positive signs, with annual gambling revenues down about 12% since 2000, as the tourism industry has declined, Eddington said.
