A parliamentary committee considering introducing a casino resort in Thailand submitted a report to the National Assembly on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. The document is said to recommend that the government enact laws to allow “entertainment complexes” containing legal casinos to be installed in various places across the country. The proposal comes as Thailand seeks to revive its tourism industry as a way to boost its economic revival under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 안전놀이터 추천
“We are focusing on attracting foreigners to strengthen tourism and draw more money out of their pockets,” the news agency said, citing the committee’s vice chairman, Rep. Pische Chuangfan Putaidan “It will also prevent money outflows from Thai gamblers and help the government collect huge taxes for our economic security,” he added, according to the report. Mr. Fischer said the operation of multiple game centers would result in at least $400 billion ($10.9 billion) in additional tax revenues being collected each year. The proposal requires a minimum tax of 30 percent on casino operators’ income, Bloomberg added.
The proposal also suggests allowing Thai nationals, who are at least 20 years old and have at least 500,000 Thai dollars in their bank accounts, to gamble. According to this news outlet, the panel’s recommendations are based on the Thai Gambling Act of 1935, which prohibits most types of betting but includes provisions authorizing the government to issue laws or licenses authorizing specific game activities and venues. Thai lawmakers will deliberate on whether to act on the committee’s recommendations, and the process could be completed before a parliamentary recess in September, Mr Fischer said.
In June, the Commission proposed that it could be viable to spread five casino resorts across the country as a localized driver of economic development. The committee said earlier this month that just over 80% of 3,296 people supported the introduction of casino resorts. The most popular place mentioned was the second most popular place within 100 kilometers of the capital Don Mueang Airport, a resort in the Greater Bangkok area. The third-highest-ranked place was the border area of Thailand, where permanent immigration offices are located. A number of commentators, speaking to GGRAcia, said public support is essential for the plan to have a chance of success.
