Born in 1988, he announced his retirement in May 2021, but the fact that a player once ranked as high as 13th in the world turned into a soldier during the war made the global headlines.
When he was active, he won the tour’s singles three times and advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2011 Australian Open. He was also a man of formidable prowess in defeating Rafael Nadal in 2014 and 2015.

“Since the Russian military roughly identifies our location and fires, it feels like a bullet flying for a few seconds,” he said. “If there is a difference of more than 1m from where the bullet is flying, it will be fine, but it is not possible to know it in advance.”
Dolgopolov was deployed to the intelligence service in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region and is now back in the capital, Kyiv, awaiting his next mission.
“In particular, gunfire or fighter attacks are dangerous,” he said. “On one occasion, Russian mortars advanced close to us and were very dangerous.”
“A volunteer from Georgia died a month ago, and another colleague lost his lower body,” said Dolgopolov, who looked back at the time as the shooting was more than five times as dangerous as usual.
“There are not many deaths in our unit, but there are a number of injuries,” Dolgopolov said. “There are many deaths in other units, and the longer the war, the more people die.”
“We need more weapons to win this war, but it is not objectively in our favor,” he said, adding, “I hope the Western world will realize that this issue does not apply to Ukraine and take more action.”
