Southern Miss will be the state’s first university to offer a gaming degree when it implements a tourism major this fall. The council’s action followed a futile effort in Mississippi in 1990 to allow lawmakers to teach casinos in state schools. Under pressure from churches and other religious groups, Congress allowed the bill to be thrown out for a fifth consecutive year.
The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast campus will emphasize casino and resort management, while Hartisburg will emphasize restaurant management and hotel management.
“I’m excited that someone has stepped up to give Mississippi’s students and people a chance to do themselves better,” said Larry Gregory, executive director of the Mississippi Board of Gaming.
Alcorn State University plans to propose a master’s degree in casino management next month.
Tulane University, located in New Orleans, announced in November that it would offer casino management-focused casino resort management programs at the Edgewater Mall campus in Biloxi.
Harold Doughty, dean of USM’s School of Management and Economic Development, said in a statement, “This gives us the ability to build a real partnership with the casino and resort industries, so that we can meet their job needs with Mississippi-educated Mississippi people.”
